The City Of New York requires all residents to fully cover all mattresses or box springs in a sealed plastic bag for garbage disposal and collection. This rule was intended to prevent an increase in bed bug activity.
Under the rule, failure to place a mattress or box spring in a proper bag will result in a $100 fine imposed by the City. In addition, Co-op City residents who violate this rule may be subject to a Community Complaint with related fines and legal fees.
The City Of New York and Riverbay Corporation, the management company of Coop City, does not provide mattress or box spring bags or covers but plastic bags to cover mattresses and box spring are available at department stores, such as
JCPenney, home improvement centers, such as
Home Depot and large moving and storage companies, such as
Public Storage.
Please follow this rule when disposing mattresses and/or box springs. These covered items are to be brought to the basement or placed on the dumpster pads, located throughout the Co-op City complex, for proper trash collection.
